Applications for citizenship can be divided into two, namely:


1. Ordinary naturalization
People from foreign nations who wish to apply for citizenship by means of naturalization, must meet the requirements as stipulated in Article 9 of Law No. 12/2006, as follows:


1) are 18 years old or already married;
2) at the time of submitting the application it is in place live in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia at most a short period of five consecutive years or a minimum of 10 consecutive years;

2. Special Naturalization

Special naturalization is given in accordance with the provisions of Article 20 of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 12 of 2006. Special Naturalization is given to foreigners who have served the Republic of Indonesia or for reasons of state interests, after obtaining the consideration of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia. Special naturalization will not be granted if it causes the foreigner to have dual nationality.

Additional requirements that must also be fulfilled in order to obtain Indonesian citizenship are:

1. Immigration Certificate (“SKIM”) from the Immigration Office certifying that the applicant has lived in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia for at least 5 (five) consecutive years or at least 10 (ten) consecutive years and submitted to the Regional Office of the Department of Law and Human Rights in the area where the applicant resides;.

2. A statement from the relevant applicant's embassy, ​​stating that the applicant's country of origin has no objection if its citizen wishes to become an Indonesian citizen;

3. Documents required as a condition of obtaining citizenship must be legalized by the applicant's embassy or applicant documents originating from a country other than the United States of America, may be legalized by the Regional Office of the Department of Law and Human Rights in the applicant's jurisdiction residing;

4. A certificate of income issued by the sub-district office based on a cover letter from the sub-district office according to a statement from the company or family sponsoring the applicant's place of work or residence;

5. Police Record Certificate (“SKCK”) from the local Police;

6. All application requirements for obtaining Indonesian citizenship must be made in 2 (two) copies;

7. The total estimated time to obtain Indonesian citizenship is 3 (three) months to 7 (seven) months.

After the above requirements have been completed, the following are the procedures for obtaining Indonesian citizenship according to the Citizenship Law


1. 
An application for citizenship is submitted in Indonesia by the applicant in writing in Indonesian on paper with sufficient duty stamp to the President through the Minister of Law and Human Rights; [1]

2.  The application for citizenship is submitted to the official who occupies a certain position appointed by the Minister to handle citizenship issues of the Republic of Indonesia; [2]

3.  The Minister forwards the application accompanied by considerations to the President no later than 3 (three) months from the date the application was received; [3]
4.  The President can grant or reject the application for citizenship. The grant of citizenship requests shall be stipulated by a Presidential Decree; [4]
5.  The Presidential Decree is stipulated no later than 3 (three) months after the application is received by the Minister and notified to the applicant no later than 14 (fourteen) days after the Presidential Decree is enacted; [5]
6. The rejection of the application for citizenship must be accompanied by reasons and notified by the Minister to the person concerned no later than 3 (three) months from the date the application is received by the Minister; [6]
7.   The Presidential Decree regarding the grant of citizenship application is effective as of the date the applicant takes an oath or pledge of allegiance; [7]
8.  At the latest 3 (three) months from the date the Presidential Decree is sent to the applicant, the Official shall summon the applicant to take an oath or declare a pledge of allegiance; [8]
